Satin has long been imbibed in the minds of the masses as an elegant fabric that is almost magical. It is comprised of just the right mix of fibers—both man made and natural—to produce a slippery, smooth sheet. For this reason, satin conjures up a number of images in people’s minds when it is mentioned. This ability to invoke such a strong image in people creates an emotional response. As such, satin has been used as a device to stir emotions in a listener innumerable times by singers and musicians. Particularly, satin sheets are used as an effective device in lamentable love songs.

These sheets are indelible in the public consciousness as a symbol of love and raw emotion. To avoid sappy-ness, most singers will avoid singing about love and prefer to sing about unrequited love or a love that has gone sour. To see how much an effect the image of satin sheets have had on the listening public, all one needs to do is listen to the classic 1970’s number one country hit song “Satin Sheets” by Jeanne Pruett where she laments “Satin Sheets to lie on…Satin pillows to cry on” (Dolly Parton recorded a cover version of this song and occasionally is erroneously credited as the song’s originator.) Satin again used as a symbol of love and crying on satin is symbolic of wishing for that lost love to return.

Another song that provides an indelible image of satin is one recorded by Silverchair. The lyrics to their song, also titled “Satin Sheets” goes like this: “Just wait for us to say it, And we'll make you lie, And anyone who cares, Lies on satin sheets.” These lyrics are a bit more downbeat. There is a hint of anger as opposed to loss, which would be consistent with a band the likes of Silverchair. (This is not a slight on the band, but rather a clear observation offered to put the lyrics in perspective) Again, the image of sheets is used to stir up emotional cords.

And this stirring of emotions is a successful device and we will continue to see satin used again for time immemorial.
